Our Curriculum

At Hampton College Primary, our curriculum is the beginning of a lifelong journey through education into adulthood, which inspires and motivates our children, preparing and nurturing them for their future as global citizens. We ensure that our curriculum is knowledge-based, providing sequential, inspiring, engaging and memorable learning opportunities for each and every child in order to develop a deep and secure understanding in each subject. Through holistic, broad and balanced teaching of core and foundation subjects our aim is to equip each learner with the knowledge, skills, understanding and cultural capital they require to achieve their future potential, whatever their talent may be.

Our curriculum has been developed to create children who:

  • are inspired learners.
  • are good citizens.
  • are independent thinkers.
  • have enquiring minds.
  • are great friends.

This is the philosophy of how we want to work and learn.

As a whole school, we provide a creative curriculum based around the "Cornerstones Curriculum". This is an exciting and inspiring topic based curriculum.

  • What is the Cornerstones Curriculum?

The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. The curriculum is delivered through Imaginative Learning projects which provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning. We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our topic based curriculum provides a variety of learning challenges throughout the academic year that require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.

Each topic begins with a memorable experience and is divided into four stages –

    • Engage
    • Develop
    • Innovate
    • Express

Each stage provides opportunities for children to learn and respond in a variety of ways, keeping projects flexible and able to follow children’s interests and needs.

  • How the Cornerstones Curriculum works

Children will progress through four stages of learning in each ILP – Engage, Develop, Innovate and Express.

    At the ‘Engage’ stage, children:

    • gain memorable first-hand experiences, such as going on a visit or inviting a special visitor into school
    • enjoy ‘WOW’ experiences
    • get an exciting introduction to a topic or theme
    • begin researching and setting enquiry questions
    • get lots of opportunities to make observations
    • develop spoken language skills
    • take part in sensory activities
    • have lots of fun to fully 'engage' with their new topic.

    At the ‘Develop’ stage, children:

    • improve their knowledge and understanding of the topic
    • develop and practice their new skills
    • compose, make, do, build, investigate, explore, write for different purposes and read across the curriculum
    • research their own questions and those set by others
    • follow new pathways of enquiry based on their interests
    • complete homework activities that support their learning.

    At the ‘Innovate’ stage, children:

    • apply skills, knowledge and understanding in real-life contexts
    • solve real or imagined problems using everything they’ve learnt
    • get inspired by imaginative and creative opportunities
    • revisit anything not fully grasped at the ‘Develop’ stage.

    At the ‘Express’ stage, children:

    • become the performers, experts and informers
    • share their achievements with parents, classmates and the community
    • evaluate finished products and processes
    • link what they have learnt to where they started
    • celebrate their achievements!

  • Cornerstones Curriculum Big Ideas

We believe that children deserve a balanced curriculum that enables them to develop a deep understanding of all subjects and the interconnections between them.

The rationale for the Cornerstones Curriculum takes the form of 10 Big Ideas that provide a purpose for the aspects, skills, knowledge and contexts chosen to form the substance of the curriculum.

These big ideas form a series of multi-dimensional interconnected threads across the curriculum, allowing children to encounter and revisit their learning through a variety of subject lenses. Over time, these encounters help children to build conceptual frameworks that will enable a better understanding of increasingly sophisticated information and ideas.

Further information about the Cornerstones Big Ideas can be found here.
